The parent initiates by writing an entry in a spiral notebook.

The parent places the notebook in a special location, known only to the parent and child (example: under a pillow; on the bedside table or kitchen drawer; etc.).

Entries can include questions, observations, opinions, clarifications, etc.

The parent asks the child/teen to return the spiral notebook to the designated location afterward.
